The iconic comedy-drama Sex and the City premiered in 1998 and was inspired by Candace Bushnell’s 1996 book anthology of the same name. The series follows the lives of four friends who are each trying to find love in New York City while balancing successful careers and navigating various societal pressures.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, relationship columnist Carrie Bradshaw, serves as the show’s narrator, while Kim Cattrall stars as sex-positive publicist Samantha Jones. Kristin Davis portrays hopeless romantic Charlotte York and Cynthia Nixon plays ambitious lawyer Miranda Hobbes.
Throughout its six seasons, SATC earned seven Primetime Emmy Awards, eight Golden Globe Awards and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its worldwide popularity spawned two films, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), along with a prequel TV series by The CW called The Carrie Diaries, which aired for two seasons from 2013 to 2014. The franchise continued with And Just Like That, a revival featuring three of the four original cast members. Cattrall was not initially involved when the series premiered in 2021 due to her long-suspected feud with Parker, but she made a brief cameo as Samantha during the season 2 finale in 2023.
